Introduction to Business (1st period): We reviewed chapter 2 today by going over the study guide and doing the online practice test. We will test on chapter 2 tomorrow and begin our project for the 1st nine weeks. Students will write a research paper on the economic development of a different country. We will work on this paper in class over the next couple of days. Research outside of class time will be required.

Economics and Personal Finance (2nd, 4th, 5th - 7th): We reviewed for the test tomorrow. All students were given a word find to complete. This assignment, if completed, will be worth extra credit points on tomorrow's test. Students should focus on vocabulary, notes, and the quiz at the end of the notes while studying for the test. After class tomorrow and on Friday, we will be working on balancing a checkbook and bank statement reconciliations.

Introduction to Business: (1st period) Last week, students worked in groups to create presentations based on Chapter 2. We broke the chapter into four sections and each group discussed its section using a Power Point presentation. Students were graded on their presentations. We will have a graded assignment tomorrow that is based on the presentations and the notes the students took. Chapter 2 will be reviewed on Wednesday, and there will be a chapter test on Thursday. Students had an additional assignment on this past Friday...they read two current articles with differing opinions as to whether the US has come out of the recession. A worksheet with questions was to be completed based on their reading...this counted as a quiz grade.

Economics and Personal Finance: (2nd, 4th, 5th - 7th periods) We began Unit 2: Managing Energy, Money, and Tasks. The focus last week was on money management. Students were give the case studies of two individuals and had to create budgets: 1st on paper and then in Excel using formulas. We will complete the last budget tomorrow and it will be turned in. Wednesday, we will discuss task or time management, review the entire unit on Thursday and test on the unit on Friday. Students read articles last Friday about budgeting, budgeting for college, and a college checklist for high school students. They had to complete a worksheet based on their reading...this counted as a quiz grade. Today, we worked on current events related to finance, business, or technology---this assignment will be a daily grade.

Introduction to Business (1st period): Students worked on assignments related to chapter 1. The following responses are due tomorrow: page 11 (1-3); p. 15 (1-3); read pp. 17-22 and answer p. 22 (1-3); p. 26 (1-3); p. 28 (1,7,8), p. 29 (all vocabulary matching), and #34 on page 30. Tomorrow, we will go over the responses and discuss section 1-3 on economic systems. We will have a review activity on Thursday in preparation for Friday's test.

Economics and Personal Finance (all other periods): Today, we went over the worksheet with the scenarios regarding Consumer Rights and Responsibilities and calculating unit pricing. We also went over the answers to the eight question quiz. You should study both of these worksheets for the test tomorrow. Also, look over the crossword puzzle and your notes. 6th and 7th periods will take their tests on Thursday. Tomorrow, after the test, we will begin the Unit on the management of energy (person), money, and time.

I am looking forward to a good year in the Economics and Personal Finance classes and the Introduction to Business class.

A couple of announcements:

Stashonda Holmes has been elected regional vice president for FBLA (J. Sargeant Reynolds region). Congratulations, Stashonda!
1st FBLA meeting for the year: Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 3:15 - 4:30 PM
Economics and Personal Finance students will be taking the MoneyWise industry certification test right before holiday break this year. Regardless of grade, those who pass this test and the course can be exempt from the final exam.

What has happened so far in classes:

Economics and Personal Finance (2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th): We have begun discussing consumer rights and responsibilities. So far students have been assigned the following: An eight question open-note mini quiz, a vocabulary crossword puzzle, research on product recalls---good scenario and bad scenario, and a worksheet on Consumer Rights and Responsibilities and Calculating Unit Price to find the best bargain. There will be a test on this unit on Wednesday. Because of the pep rally, 6th and 7th periods will have their tests on Thursday. Review all notes and any activities done so far.

Introduction to Business (1st period): We began discussing and took notes on chapter 1: Economic Decisions and Systems. We have left to review section 1-3 which talks about different economic systems. All other sections have been covered. Students have submitted the following so far: An analysis of two decisions based on the Economic Decision Making model and a breakdown of two consumer products of choice into their factors of production (natural, human, and capital). We will continue to work on the chapter this week. We will test on this chapter on Friday.

Personal Finance (all periods but 2nd): Students took notes on the last section of the chapter, "Globalization". Today, we used those notes, and the ones we took previously, to work on a Study Guide for the chapter. At the end of the chapter, we reviewed the study guide. There will be a test tomorrow on chapter 2. Students are to bring their study guides to be turned in for a grade or extra credit on the test.

Introduction to Business (2nd period): On Monday, students took notes on the final section of the chapter which dealt with how to make a good impression on the job and the exit interview. They also viewed two videos on dressing for the interview and common mistakes people make at the interview. Today we worked on a Study Guide for chapter 9. There will be a test tomorrow.

Personal Finance (all classes but 2nd): We have been studying the basics in Economics using chapters from "Economics: New Ways of Thinking". Yesterday, students broke up into groups and worked on worksheets from chapter 2, section 1. Today, they will be given more time to complete these worksheets. We will begin the next section on globalization. Students will work on the focus questions on page 41 and defining the key terms on the same page. They will also answer on page 53, questions 6-10 under "Understanding the Main Ideas"---this is an individual assignment. On Friday, we will further discuss the section on Globalization while the students take notes. 1st period is a little behind the other classes due to two days of SOL testing.

Introduction to Business (2nd): We will continue discussing Career Planning---students will take notes on the last two sections of the text which deal with the interview process. Students will be expected to take notes. There will be a homework assignment which reviews the key concepts in the chapter: p. 226 - Communicate Business Concepts (1-10) and Develop Your Business Language (11-23).

Personal Finance: We reviewed modules 1-3 from the IRS website to prepare for the test. A couple of additional items were given for the notes. Tomorrow, we will have a test on these first three modules. During the remaining class time Thursday and on Friday, we will work on modules 4-6.

Introduction to Business: Today in class, we completed a worksheet (graded) for Chapter 6. Tomorrow, students will receive a description of their group project, which involves interviewing a small business owner. We will also begin Chapter 7 tomorrow with notes/discussion.

Personal Finance: We began a unit yesterday on "Understanding Taxes". By the end of this month, students will be able to complete and file a 1040 tax return. We took notes to introduce the topic and discussed a little about the history of our system of taxation and where our tax dollars go. I reminded all college bound seniors to also "nudge" their parents to have their taxes done, so that they could jump on the FAFSA as soon as possible. Financial aid is on a first come first serve basis, so you want to go to www.fafsa.gov, request a PIN, and get going on the FAFSA. We worked today on Modules 1-3 under Tax Tutorials on www.irs.gov/app/understandingTaxes/student/index.jsp. We will review tomorrow and test on the first three of the fourteen modules on Thursday.

Introduction to Business: Yesterday, we discussed entrepreneurship in class guided by section 6-3 in our text. Today, students broke up into small groups to prepare for a project. Each group had to come up with 10 in-depth questions that they would ask a small business owner. This assignment was due today and will be graded. The project will involve interviewing a local business owner based on these questions. If you were absent today, you will have to work by yourself to come up with a list of 10 questions to pose to a local entrepreneur and turn it in.

In the Personal Finance classes, as well as the Introduction to Business class, we worked on completion of projects at the end of last week and on Monday. On Tuesday, the Introduction to Business class had to complete a study guide for Chapter 6 which deals with business ownership and entrepreneurship. We will grade this assignment and discuss it on tomorrow. In the Personal Finance class, we are wrapping up Unit 6 which deals with insurance. The class was divided into groups today and folk worked together on a worksheet. It is due tomorrow towards the end of class. Yesterday, the Personal Finance classes worked to wrap up their stock market project and assignment 6-1 on page 82.

By most accounts, the FBLA Holiday party was a success!

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd - 7th): Some classes needed to wrap up their presentations from their Wall Street Journal article. Other classes worked on completing outstanding projects: Stock Market Project (due Monday the 14th) and Assignment 6-1: brochure or flyer on teenagers and risky behavior (due Friday the 11th). These will be amongst the last grades before interims. Remember the project grade weighs a lot more heavily than other grades, so do your best.

Introduction to Business (2nd period): We will return to our 2nd nine weeks project: The Economic Systems of Countries Around the World. Students have received the criteria for this research paper---I have extended the deadline due to numerous computer issues which have been resolved (now due Monday, December 14, 2009)

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd-7th): Yesterday, students were divided into small groups and assigned an article from December's edition of the Wall Street Journal (classroom edition). Groups were to read the article for understanding, summarize it, and report out to the class today regarding the five key points the author was trying to make. They should be prepared to answer questions about their article as well.

Introduction to Business (2nd): Today: Open book test on chapter 5. Once that is completed and if we have time, this class will also present their WSJ article.

FBLA Christmas Party - Tuesday, December 15, 2009, in cafeteria from 3:15 - 6:00 PM. All members plus one guest per member---food, fellowship, and fun!!!! Please let Mrs. Henderson know by Friday the 11th if you will be in attendance and if you are bringing a guest.

FBLA will be selling lollipops (Mrs. Henderson will have some sugar-free ones) as soon as our shipment arrives for two Angel Tree programs (Department of Social Services and Prison Fellowship). Buying a lollipop will enable you to treat yourself and someone else to something nice!

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd-7th): We (finally) finished watching "Confessions of a Shopaholic"---very "apropos" to the upcoming holiday season. We made a new entry to track our stock prices in Excel. We will wrap this project up soon. Students will be working on a review sheet of the material on which we took notes on Monday. Yesterday, I was out with a sick child; students will receive a daily grade for doing their assignment with the substitute. I did receive a report that some students refused to do the assignment...no work, no grade (0). Let's hope that the next time I am out, students will make better choices regarding what they will and will not do.

Introduction to Business (2nd): In preparation for Monday's chapter 5 test, students worked online on the crossword puzzle to review terms for this chapter. (www.cengage.com)

We will have a guest speaker with us on Friday from BB&T bank, Jennifer M. Dixon, Assistant Vice President (Financial Center Leader). She will be speaking to all classes about banking services and careers in the financial services industry.

Personal Finance (all periods but 2nd and 6th): We began discussing Insurance. The students took notes so that they could begin to identify ways to manage risk and to describe how insurance is used to protect against financial loss. We will continue our discussion tomorrow.

Introduction to Business (2nd period): We completed viewing the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic" which we began before the Thanksgiving break. This movie humorously takes a look at consumer debt and spending. Students were to ponder the concept of "delaying gratification" as they viewed the DVD.

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd - 7th): Today in class, we began a unit on insurance and ways to manage life's risks. The following are daily and homework assignments (if not completed in class): Read pp. 70-84 in your work book. Respond to "What Do You Think?", p. 80; Exercise 6A, p. 81; 6C and 6D, page 84. There will be a homework check on these assignments when we meet again. Also, Assignment 6-1, which requires a little more time and creativity, will be worked on in class on Tuesday and will be due Wednesday, end of class. Yesterday, students took a test on Unit 5.

Introduction to Business (2nd): Today, we went over the study guide for Chapter 5 and answered any questions that students had pertaining to the chapter. The test has been moved to Wednesday. Yesterday, students worked on the study guide in class---this was graded as a homework check.

WELCOME BACK AFTER A SOGGY FRIDAY (NO SCHOOL)

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd-7th): Today we researched articles dealing with spy ware, phishing, Internet fraud, identity theft, and scamming (last few pages of Unit 5). Students were to find two articles, read them, and summarize them in one paragraph each. They were to put the website where the article was found below their summary. This is a daily grade. The article should be more of a "current event" type article---not an article from wikipedia defining these terms. On Tuesday, the 17th, we will wrap up this chapter and students will work on a study guide. There will be a Test on Unit 5 on Thursday of this week. On Wednesday, we will work on our stock market portfolio.

Introduction to Business (2nd): Students continued to work on their career mini-project. It is due at the end of the period. We are using the following website: www.bls.gov/oco. We will continue working in chapter five---Business and Our Economy. I anticipate a quiz on this chapter on Monday, the 23rd.

Personal Finance (1st, 3rd-7th): Today in class, we continued to work on balancing a checkbook register. We also discussed case studies involving consumer fraud and deception. Assignment: Exercise 5-D and 5-I in your workbook. Homework check tomorrow!

Introduction to Business (2nd): We began Chapter 5 which focuses on business and employment in the United States' economy. Students worked in groups on the worksheet "Jobs...Jobs...Jobs". We will begin a mini-project tomorrow using www.bls.gov/oco to do some career research. Tonight, think about a job you'd be interested in having. This will count as a project grade for the 2nd nine weeks. Also, you should continue to work on your major project for the 2nd nine weeks: THE ECONOMIC SYSTEMS OF COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD

Personal Finance: (All periods except 2nd and 7th) - This week we completed the car buying project which included three phases: a research phase - researching and choosing cars; a spreadsheet phase - putting the information for our realistic car and dream car on spreadsheets to calculate monthly payments based on interest rates; and a report phase - pulling all components together in a report. The report (a project grade) was due today. Monday, we will begin a unit on the Stock Market.

Introduction to Business (2nd period): On Wednesday, we had a quiz on chapter 3 (closed note). On Thursday, we began note taking on Chapter 4 (Social Responsibility of Business and Government). We discussed business ethics today. Homework for Friday: Students had to develop their own "Code of Ethics", similar to a sample provided in class. Students were given time in class to complete this homework, but may finish the assignment over the weekend if they didn't finish it today.

Personal Finance (All periods but 2nd and 6th):
Today, we reviewed the formula for compounding interest on an investment-A=P(1+i) to the nth power and worked examples on the board. We began our "Car Buying" project. Students selected from the internet a "realistic car" and a "dream car". We will set up a spread sheet and determine monthly payments for someone with a good credit score and a poor credit score. We read an article from the FTC on buying new cars. A worksheet will follow tomorrow.

Introduction to Business (2nd period): The Global Economy (Chapter 3 study guide). We will be working on this study guide today and and finish it tonight. Students also have to write two paragraphs about international trade. On the back of the study guide are eight questions. Students may choose any two about which to write their essays.
